Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch e-RUPI, a digital payment solution, on 2 August 2021. The main objective of this solution is to make online payment easy and secure. The platform has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India in collaboration with the Financial Services Department, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Health Authority.

Taking the first step towards E Rupi digital currency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched an electronic voucher based digital payment system called ‘eRUPI’. The platform has been developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the Department of Financial Services, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Health Authority. It will be a person-specific and purpose-specific payments system.
eRUPI will be a cashless and contactless digital payment medium that will come in the form of SMS-string or QR code in the beneficiary’s mobile phone. Initially it will be like a prepaid gift-voucher and can be redeemed at specific accepting centers without any credit or debit card, mobile app or internet banking. e-RUPI will connect the beneficiaries to the sponsors of digital services without any physical interface.
Where can e-RUPI be used?
It can be used to provide medicines and nutrition assistance under Maternal and Child Welfare Schemes, TB Eradication Program, Ayushyaman Bharat, Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, Medicines, Diagnosis, Subsidies etc. This payment solution can be used in the private sector as a digital voucher under employee welfare and corporate social responsibility programs.

How e-RUPI vouchers will be issued
This system has been developed by NPCI on its UPI platform and involves banks which will issue these vouchers. To achieve this, any corporate or government agency has to contact partner banks which can be both private and government. Along with this, information has to be given as to for whom and for what purpose it is being taken. Beneficiaries will be identified by their mobile number. The voucher in the name of a person will be given to the service provider by the bank only to that person.
